When androgen (male hormone) increases in women, hair growth, acne and menstrual irregularities are seen. The increase in male hormones is caused by the ovaries or adrenal glands secreting too much androgens. In women, hair develops in areas where hair is not normally present. The increase in hard, colored and thick hair on the upper lip, lower jaw, chest, belly, back, coccyx, upper arm and thigh is called hirsutism. Sometimes androgens are too much and male pattern hair loss is experienced.
Increased hair growth is not just a cosmetic problem. It is also a harbinger of an underlying serious illness. Sometimes, hair growth may be an underlying endocrine disorder, or it may be a sign of a tumoral growth in the body. For this reason, epilation methods performed without knowing the reason for hair growth will only provide temporary relief.
Medical treatment of increased hair growth is based on the cause. For this reason, ovarian hormones, thyroid hormones, pituitary gland diseases and adrenal gland should be investigated.
